Ranking My Favorite Audiobook Narrators

Narration can totally make or break an audiobook experience. I've quit more than a few series because the narration just didn't cut it. But when you find a narrator who nails it, they can turn even a so-so book into something unforgettable. Here are my favorite audiobook narrators who've kept me glued to my headphones.

1. Jeff Hays — Dungeon Crawler Carl

Top of my list. This guy brings full-cast energy to the table, which is insane considering it's just him. Every character has a distinct voice, and he never sounds tired, even seven books in. He's got that rare ability to make a long series feel fresh, book after book — like he's got an endless supply of enthusiasm for every word he reads. That's some dedication right there.

2. Michael Kramer & Kate Reading — Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere

These two usually take on the Cosmere series together, and their two-narrator system is brilliant. They trade off POV chapters and somehow maintain consistency across a massive ensemble cast. It's like they're in perfect sync, and it adds a dynamic layer to the storytelling. If you're tackling Sanderson's epics, these are the voices you want guiding you through.

3. Robb Moreira — Victor of Tucson

Robb's narration on Victor of Tucson is spot on. He brings the story to life in a way that adds a whole extra layer to an already great series — the kind of performance where the narrator becomes part of why you love the book, not just the person reading it to you.

[General rule] A mediocre narrator can totally ruin an otherwise great book. A great narrator can breathe life into a book that might not be all that stellar on its own. Good narration is like having a conversation with a friend who's just as invested in the story as you are.

I'm always on the lookout for narrators who can deliver that kind of immersive experience. So I'd love to hear from you — who's blown you away? Whether it's someone new or a seasoned pro, drop me some recommendations. You never know when you might find the next Jeff Hays or Michael Kramer and Kate Reading duo. Narration is an art form in itself, and I'm here for the voices that get that right.
