The Name of the Wind: Kvothe Tells His Own Legend

The Name of the Wind book cover by Patrick Rothfuss

Kvothe telling his own damn legend to a chronicler in a nothing little inn shouldn't work as well as it does, but Rothfuss makes you believe every fucking word of it. The prose is stupid good — dense enough that it could've been a slog, except it never is.

A slow burn that earns it

Music, sympathy and naming and the whole University system, a kid who's a legend and a fuck-up at the same time — it's a slow burn, but it earns every hour it asks for. Nowhere near my usual LitRPG lane and it still landed harder than most things I've listened to.

[Narration note] Nick Podehl carries this one completely. His read is a huge part of why Kvothe's voice lands as hard as it does — the man's basically synonymous with this series at this point.

Solid 9/10. If you only ever take one recommendation off this site that isn't progression fantasy, make it this one.
