Other Progression Fantasy Series I Want to Try
Caught up on Dungeon Crawler Carl and Victor of Tucson, and I've devoured everything Brandon Sanderson's thrown my way, so it's time to dive into some new progression fantasy and LitRPG series. Here's what's on my radar:
- He Who Fights with Monsters by Shirtaloon — that classic isekai setup, where the protagonist, Jason, gets dropped into a new world and has to level up and figure out his powers from scratch. Ordinary guy becomes extraordinary, with some actual moral dilemmas mixed into the power growth. I'm here for it.
- The Primal Hunter by Zogarth — this one's supposed to be brutal progression, which means intense, and honestly I'm all about watching a character get pushed to the absolute limit. Average guy, new world, brutal challenges. Curious how far he can go.
- Cradle by Will Wight — cultivation-style advancement, characters climbing the ranks of power in a structured way. It gets talked about constantly for its world-building and how complex the magic system gets. Feels like watching a strategy game unfold.
- Defiance of the Fall by TheFirstDefier — LitRPG mixed with survival, apocalyptic setting, the world gets turned upside down and the hero has to rebuild from nothing. High-stakes rebuilding stories are exactly my lane.
- Beware of Chicken by CasualFarmer — a total change of pace. Cozy, farming-based, base-building instead of nonstop combat. Sometimes I want the stakes to be about cultivating a life instead of surviving one, and this looks like the palate cleanser for that.
Branching out past LitRPG
After all this talk of progression fantasy, I'm also thinking about branching into horror and more action-packed series too. I don't want to get stuck in just one lane. Exploring different genres is like opening new doors — I never know what's going to catch my interest or catch me off guard.
[How I listen] Most of this happens while I'm driving for work or doing chores around the house. This blog is a hobby, not a book-review operation — just honest takes from my corner of the world.
If any of these end up being duds or hidden gems, I'll follow up once I've actually gotten into them.
